Taekwondo

What is Taekwondo?

Tae Kwon Do translates into "the way of the hand and foot".

Taekwondo is Korean Martial Art that has roots dating back to the 1700's(Taekkyeon). The Taekwondo we know today is derived from Tang Soo do (Korean Karate & Kung Fu).

Taekwondo has been used for centuries by Military and Civilian's all over the world. In fact, a lot of the martial arts you see today are integrated with the legendary kicking techniques from, guess who? The king of kicks, TKD!

This is because of the power and speed generated (when done correctly) is incredibly fast and powerful!

The Children Love It!

Children love to run, jump and kick bags down! Taekwondo is the king(or queen) of KICKS! Though we do quite a lot of punching, kicks are where TKD really stands out!

Children are tested and challenged to do more than throw a perfect, awesome, cool kick! Taekwondo is about A LOT more than that!

OUR MISSION IS TO BUILD LEADERS!

Taekwondo is more than the physical skills! For students to advance in rank, they must demonstrate their ability to follow directions at home, in school & during their training. Students are expected to maintain their grades and behavior to receive a black stripe on their belt that signifies they are ready to test for the next belt. Students must demonstrate the following:

  • discipline (mental & ethical)
  • etiquette, respect, loyalty
  • justice, honor, integrity
  • self-discipline, self-confidence
  • self-control, perseverance

What's On The Agenda? (curriculum)

While organizations such as ITF or Kukkiwon define the general style of Taekwondo, individual clubs and schools tend to tailor their Taekwondo practices. Although each Taekwondo club or school is different, a student at Tiger Martial Arts will take part in the following instruction:

  • Forms (poomsae): these serve the same function as kata in the study of karate
  • Sparring & breaking
  • Self-defense techniques
  • Learning the fundamental techniques of Taekwondo; these include kicks, blocks, punches, and strikes, and an introduction to ground work
  • Throwing and/or falling techniques
  • Both anaerobic and aerobic workout, including stretching
  • A focus on mental and ethical discipline
  • Examinations to progress to the next rank
  • Development of personal success and leadership skills

Military Application

In 1952, South Korean President Syngman Rhee witnessed a martial arts demonstration by ROK Officer Choi Hong-hi and Nam Tae-hi from the 29th Infantry Division. He misrecognized the technique on display as Taekkyeon, and urged martial arts to be introduced to the army under a single system.

Since then, Taekwondo techniques can be found throughout Militaries around the world.

Online / Hybrid Training Available

We all know it's so much easier to for students to maintain their focus and attention when they are training at the school, but not everyone has that option today. For this reason, we have developed an extremely interactive alternate training method that is both fun and safe.  Children can train completely at home, at the school or a combination of the two(hybrid).
